Our blue moon wedding

Aaron and I were married on July 31st. It was the best day of my life. I was surrounded by my closest friends and family and I got to marry my best friend.

We have so many talented people in our lives and they all used their talents to make our wedding magical. My mom listened to all of my ideas and made them happen. Her and I crafted all of the invitations, save the dates, and garland while marathoning Gilmore Girls. My dad supported us through all the freak outs. My uncle, Pip, and our friend Charlie took incredible photos throughout the week. My aunt Martha made us the most beautiful marriage certificate. Our friend Aaron wrote the most beautiful ceremony and was our officiant. He helped keep me sane in the weeks leading up to the wedding. My aunt Kimmy found everything and everyone we needed, from wine barrels and flowers for the ceremony space, to all the wooden chairs and benches, the tables, and the servers. She organized boat rides earlier in the week for guests; she baked muffins and appetizers, found rentals for all our friends, and brought safety pins to the rehearsal dinner when my dress was falling apart. Our friends and my aunts and uncles made appetizers, we had family running errands all over the place picking up chairs and sound equipment. Aaron's parents made wine and sangria in addition to the cupcakes Aaron's mom made. My aunt and cousin made all of the bouquets and various family members mowed lawns and put up lights and decorations. Aaron's grandfather used his wood working skills to create birch cake stands and wooden s'more roasting sticks. We had friends making signs and labels and writing on chalkboards, organizing popcorn flavours and s'mores chocolate, and decorating port-o-potties. The venue itself was my aunt and uncle's house. They generously gave us use of their beautiful home and property, and worked hard all summer to make sure the place looked amazing. It was always a beautiful place, but they really went above and beyond. I don't know how we will ever thank everyone enough. If any of you are reading this, please know that we love you and appreciate everything you did for us. The wedding was perfect.

My mom and aunt found a bunch of old window frames last summer. Aaron's mom and I turned them into chalk boards. Alice and Megan spent the morning of the wedding writing on all the chalk boards and making signs to label the food. I think they turned out beautiful. We took two of the chalkboards with us to Pittsburgh, and one of them still has Megan's writing on it. I can't bring myself to erase it!

Our wedding was on the same night as a blue moon, which became our theme. We had a blue moon on the invites, on the wine glasses, in the garland, and on the wine bottles. While it looked really pretty, we didn't get to see the moon that night. Right before our ceremony, in typical Nova Scotia fashion, the fog rolled in. It was so thick that you couldn't see the ocean in the background. However, it was much better than heavy rain, which was what we woke up to.

Aaron and I walked down the aisle together, while Nova Scotia fiddle music played. The ceremony was short, but very meaningful for us. Our brothers stood with us and carried our rings. Aaron's mom read "The Elements of Love" and my aunt Martha read "[i carry your heart with me(i carry it in]".

I cried, and had to ask Officiant Aaron to repeat what I was supposed to say. That was a little embarrassing.

I love that you can see Ethan cheering in this one. He's so cute!

My mom dried out rose petals from her garden in New Mexico. In total, she had about 5 gallons. She had everyone throw them when we walked back down the aisle.

Blue moon reception

Our reception was the most fun night of my life. I don't know if I can properly describe how great it was, but I shall try.

At first, we were a little sad that it was so foggy, but I think it ended up being the thing that made the party last so long. Had it been as hot as it was the following day, I don't think anyone would have been dancing until 3:00 am. Also, the photos ended up looking pretty great!

Once again, these photos are by Charlie and Pip, and we love them. There are also a couple of gems from our photo booth thrown in!

Our parents are pretty great.

Above you can see what may have been my only "bridezilla" moment: we were trying to get group shots done and people couldn't hear when they were being called. I'm so happy Charlie took this photo, because I think it's hilarious.

Sara did so much work to make the wedding happen! I feel bad that she did so much since when I went to her wedding in Seattle, I wasn't slicing and toasting baguettes, decorating toilets, or helping her get into her wedding dress on top of a cliff. Thanks, lady. You're amazing.

All of the food at our wedding was so good! Immediately after the ceremony, we served fresh fruit margarita popsicle in a variety of flavours: lime and mint, strawberry lime, watermelon, peach, and blackberry, and kiwi . We also had red and white wine, made by Aaron's parents, sangria made by Aaron's mom, Garrison beer, and iced tea, lemonade, and water. The appetizers came out shortly after the popsicles. Aaron, my mom, and I spent so many hours coming up with a list of appetizers that would be delicious, compliment each other and the season, as well as have several options for various diet restrictions. In the end, we had bruschetta, sliced peaches and arugula wrapped in prosciutto, mini lobster rolls, vegan mini taco bites, strawberries stuffed with basil goat cheese with a balsamic reduction, smoked salmon mousse on sliced cucumbers and crackers, a variety of flat breads, caprese skewers, and fresh fruit skewers with raspberry, nectarine, kiwi, and strawberry. We ended up buying all of the ingredients, and then friends and family made each of the recipes.

Street Eats really saved the wedding. When Aaron and I first got engaged, we booked a Halifax food truck to cater the wedding. However, they went out of business, and we didn't hear about it for quite some time. That was probably the worst week of the whole wedding planning process. By the time we knew we had to figure something else out, most of the other food trucks in Halifax were already booked or couldn't make the long trip. I honestly thought about postponing the wedding at one point; what were we going to do if we couldn't feed the 100+ people we had invited? But then we found Street Eats. Paula, the owner, is so incredible and her food is ridiculously delicious. We are still getting compliments about how good the food was and how fun it was to have a food truck. Paula was game to try anything, and we opted to have fancy burgers. We told her what toppings we would like, and they were a million times better than we had imagined. The menu had an option of burgers:
  • The French Kiss: Brie, bacon, caramelized onions, roasted garlic aioli, and grainy Dijon mustard
  • The New Mexican: Hatch green chile, tomato, lettuce, 1000 Island dressing, and cheddar
  • The Ethan: Avocado slices, grilled onions, smoked Gouda, bacon, and chipotle aioli
  • The Warren: Lettuce, tomato, onion, and maple bbq sauce
  • The Cheesy Warren: same as The Warren, but with cheddar
  • The Jacqueline (vegan): Portobello burger with vegan roasted garlic, roasted red peppers, and greens
There was also a choice of hand cut fries, poutine (fries topped with gravy and cheese curds) and loaded fries (fries topped with cheddar, bacon, green onions, and sour cream), and green salad. It was all just so good.

While we were having family photos taken, our wonderful friend Aaron went and got us the first burgers from Street Eats. We hadn't eaten all day, so we were very excited! Our friend Kevin snapped a photo of our excitement with his phone.

The cupcakes! Aaron's mom and I spent so long making them, but it was a lot of fun. Jenn is just fantastic. We had five flavours of cupcakes and a cutting cake. We made red velvet with cream cheese frosting, vanilla cupcakes filled with raspberries and topped with a white chocolate champagne butter cream and a white chocolate heart, chocolate cupcakes with a chocolate peanut butter ganache and a peanut butter cream cheese frosting, caramel cupcakes with salted buttercream frosting, and lemon cupcakes with lavender butter cream. The cutting cake was a chocolate stout cake with a salted caramel cream cheese frosting. We topped it with little Totoro figures!

My 95 year old grandfather came all the way from southern Maine to be part of the celebration!

Aaron was just incredible as an officiant and MC.

The toasts may have been one of my favourite parts. We have very thoughtful and hilarious friends and family.

The lights and the fog looked really cool as it got darker.

We wanted to do Thai lanterns because Aaron and I had a lot of fun setting them off and watching them when we spent New Year's Eve in Chiang Mai. We thought they were pretty special and a nice way to incorporate our travels. They also made for some pretty cool photos!

After the lanterns, we had a bonfire with s'mores and a popcorn bar, and we danced all night. It was so fantastic. My lovely friend Ariana took a few photos of everyone dancing!

Everyone danced very enthusiastically. Especially Ethan and Megan. And Jeremy!
